Introduction

Clusters and nanoparticles constitute a major research area at the interface between contemporary chemistry, physics and materials science. They are particularly fascinating as they span an enormous size range between the molecular and the bulk, macroscopic regimes. This School will be concerned with theoretical approaches to modelling clusters and for predictng and understanding their structures, dynamics, reactivities and physical properties.

The Summer School will consist of morning lectures (with course notes) given by experts in the field, followed by problem solving classes and hands-on experience with relevant computer programs in the afternoons. There wil also be opportunities for members to write their own computer simulation codes. Each day there will also be research lectures presented by invited speakers and by participants of the Summer School.

Invited Lectures

In addition to the lectures constituting the course work of the summer school, there will be a number of lectures presented in the evenings by invited speakers, generally in the area of experimental cluster science. Professor Julius Jellinek (Argonne, U.S.A.), Professor Richard Palmer (Birmingham) and Professor Tony Stace (Sussex) have accepted invitations to speak.Click here for lecture titles and abstracts.

Information for Those Attending the Summer School

Further information, concerning arrival, registration etc., can be found here.

Venue

Accommodation and lectures will be in Mason Hall, a student hall of residence on the Vale site of the University of Birmingham campus. The accommodation is standard (i.e. non-ensuite) student accommodation. The afternoon workshops will be held in the IT Laboratory in the School of Chemistry (Haworth building). A clickable map of the University of Birmingham campus is available here and details of how to get to the University can be found here

Costs

The total cost, including residence, board and fees is £350. For delegates who do not require accommodation a charge of £100 is payable, to cover registration, lunches and the conference dinner.

Bursaries

Bursaries of up to £350 (i.e. full costs) are available for EPSRC-funded PhD students and postdocs - please contact Roy Johnston for further details.

Payment

The preferred method of payment is by cheque, in pounds sterling, drawn on a British bank. Please make cheques payable to "The University of Birmingham" and write "Theoretical Chemistry Summer School" on the back. Please send payment directly to Dr Johnston (adress given below). If such payment is not possible, please contact Dr Johnston to arrange an alternative method.
